demolition time (part four)
13 March 2003

It felt strange at first, walking into the kitchen, seeing the fridge on the right instead of the left. Standing at the stove, seeing the ghost of the old much-hated rangetop. The changes didn't look right at first. Maybe it was the fact of the change. Or maybe the mix of two plaster-smeared wall and that old musty minty green still on most walls and even the ceiling and oddness of a polygon of plywood underfloor alongside the now thoroughly trashed linoleum. It's an unfinished kitchen and it still looks rough and odd. But you know? It looks wonderful to me now.

Light. There's so much light from the windows now that the fridge doesn't block them on the left and the vent hood on the right.

Really, though, it's the new feeling of space. It changes everything.

Did I mention the butcher block top cabinet? It makes me happy too.

But mostly I love the space to move and a layout that makes sense.

Not that I got to find out right away. I only got to enjoy it for two days before we sort of, um, accidentally stripped the cabinets and consigned the kitchen once more to chaos, only this time we had to do all the hard work. Which meant it went much, much slower.

Made for some interesting special effects, though.

To be continued...
